Starting on June 4th
2015 and running for the next 7 days in Cuenca is the annual festival
of Corpus Christi. The majority of the weekly activities will take
place in the center of El Centro at the Parque Calderon and then over
at the Parque San Sebastian.
There are many tents
set up in the Parque Calderon that offer a wide variety of homemade
sweets as well as store bought goodies for sale. This celebration is
a Catholic religious holiday that usually begins on the 9th
Thursday after Easter. It also revolves around the worship of the
Blessed Sacrament. In addition, it also coincides with the Indigenous Celebration Inti Raymi on the June solstice.
From what we
understand, the reason for all the sweets and treats is in
remembrance of the Spaniards arriving in or around 1557, they would
offer sweets to the Andean indigenous people to entice them to come
to church.
At the end of each day, Cuenca enjoys it's favorite thing...Fireworks.
Oh my goodness! That is ridiculous! Yum.
