Wow...We Found Horror in Cuenca and So Much More

We are shopping for patio furniture and the prices range from a few hundred for plastic junk to over $2000.00US for some very nice sets.  We want an umbrella and a table and 4 or more chairs.  A local store named Kywi has a set for about $800.00US.  However, the umbrella looks kinda flimsy.

We wrote a post on a Leaving Ecuador Expats site asking if anyone had a set for sale.  Nope!  That dashed the dream of a decent set for a few hundred.  We were given a few more stores to look over and Heather and I set off with a list and high hopes.

The first cab driver didn't know where the store was.  We drove around until he happened on one of the stores on the list Boyaca.  At this store, we did discover lots of Wilton baking/cake supplies, lots of glassware, and home decor.  One round pie style table had four unusual pie slice shaped seats.  It was surprisingly very comfortable... except it was $2000.00US with no umbrella.  Sigh.

After we finished we walked a few blocks to a pharmacy Fybeca it was fun to browse the home decor in there.  And we discovered some Lithium AA Batteries, as well.  Some beauty supplies for the ladies.  Vitamins for me, as well.  It will be a return location that’s for sure.

We then headed off in the direction the cabbie declared the next store was.  Just a few blocks he said. We walked 5 with little results.  Ok...so Heather thought the store might have been down a different street and that I had it wrong.  No problem, we back tracked. Down that street.  Over a mile we walked that street.  Nothing.

We did come across a nice little tienda La Casa Del Yeso Artistico that had some nice ceramic molded items that we can paint.  We also purchased a few Christmas items that we can paint up for the holidays.  Then we came across a nice looking beauty salon Orlandys.  Heather thought it looked like a good place to get a mani-pedi with Mama (Quoted Price $13 for a medi-pedi in a massage chair.)

Ok now...Heather is still not used to the high altitude, she has been really congested with a cold, and she was getting out of breath and tired.  Which meant it was time for another cab.  We managed to get one super fast.  However, once again, he had no clue where to take us either.  I don't understand why taxi's seem to go to hell on weekends here in Cuenca, but they do.  And the drivers seem to never be able to admit they have no clue if they don't understand.  So we rode around for a while and decided to bail when we spotted th Milenium Plaza.  We walked around the back of the mall and came across the "Horror in the City" graffiti wall.  The characters on the wall included:  Freddy from Nightmare on Elm Street, Jason from Friday the 13th, the Clown from Stephen King's It, and Hannible Lecter from Silence of the Lambs.

This was our first time in that mall.  We were finally able to find a charger for our Amazon Kindle Fire HDX.  Then we decided it was a good location to grab a bite to eat.  Burger King was something different, maybe we would get lucky and it would taste like back home.  I liked it and Heather said the burger tasted funny.  We are having a difficult time adapting to hormone free and chemical free meats for some reason. After we ate, we went back out to catch another cab.

This time we were very specific with the cab driver about where we wanted to go.  Sukasa on Los Americanos por favor.  Funny but this cab ride took us from the Milenium Mall to El Centro back to Sukasa. Hmmm...That little trip to El Centro cost us over a dollar more.  And if we had not spoke up I seriously think the driver would have taken us even further away.  Funny thing is after we told him we knew what he was doing he took us directly to the correct location.

We do miss having the freedom of our own car.  But the lack of payments, repairs, and insurance does offset it a lot. I predict we will buy a car in about a year.  We will see.

While at Sukasa, Heather found a solid blue quilt she had spotted previously that we wanted to get.

On the way out we also bought 8 meters of a very pretty floral print fabric at a small shop.

With our bags in hand and 6 hours after the beginning of our trip, we decided to pick up a cheese pizza for all of us to share at home.

The trip to home was fast and uneventful.  Mama had stayed home to relax and she was delighted not to have to worry about dinner. We sat and watched more episodes of "The Walking Dead" season 3 on our Apple TV and relaxed for the rest of the night.

We heard from a friend that there might be a water interruption on Sunday so we wanted to make sure we all had showers, clothes were washed, dogs had a full clean water bowel, all dishes were washed, and some containers of water were stored up.  Thankfully, we got a break, the water outage(s) never happened.

Late last night and/or early this morning (4am) we all went off to bed.  All of us wanting to keep watching more episodes of the show but sleep took over. Heather and I made up our bed with our new quilt (it had to be washed or it would have been made when we arrived home) and we headed of to dreamland.

Sweet Dreams :-)
