Review: Bodhi's Thai Lunch and Aquaponics Urban Farm of Cuenca, Ecuador

Review: Bodhi's Thai Lunch and Aquaponics Farm

We were invited by our new friends Jan and Leanne to try an amazing Thai lunch.  We looked over the menu and emailed our choices a week prior to having the meal.

Bodhi
As always, we were excited to try some cuisine from somewhere we had never experienced.  We printed off the directions and found a taxi.  As intimidating as the directions were, the directions were very easy to follow and within 10 minutes we had arrived at Bodhi's.  As we exited the taxi, we were greeted by Bodhi as he gathered fresh greens from his Aquaponics garden.  We walked around and toured the operation.  Fish growing in a pond, the water filtering into gardens where plants grew from the fishy water.  Then the water is cycled back into the fish pond as clean water.  The fish grow faster and taste better than normal pond raised fish.  The veggies also grow faster with the nutrient rich water.  They use no pesticides or other forms of fertilizer (if they did/were using the fish would die.)  It's a pretty cool set up and very tasty food.

All three of us asked for a lemonade.  Made with real LEMONS!!!  It was a light pink but very tasty.  This was a nice treat as lemons simply don’t exist here in Cuenca.  I look in all markets and mercados every time I head out with no joy.  The only criticism is our desire for a larger glass of lemonade.  About 6oz of lemonade for $1.00 was a little high (plus my small glass was only 3/4 full.)  However, the flavor was awesome!

Fresh Organic Salad From the Garden
Our first course came out and the salad was very tasty. The greens were very flavorful and the dressing was so good we bought a bottle of it later.
Chicken Satay with Cucumber Salad and Peanut Sauce
Next came Chicken Satay and it was very tasty as well. The peanut sauce was so good and it had just a hint of Thai chili's in it.  I remarked to the ladies that it would make a great peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  Our friends are vegetarians and as we gushed over the flavors of the dish they asked Bodhi for some of the cucumber relish/salad and AMAZING peanut sauce.  Everyone remarked at just how tasty it was.  Taking a small bite of the cucumber relish, peanut sauce, and chicken made a flavorful dance in our mouths.  This dish was so good I couldn’t help but wonder if we could get more and have it as our main course.
Leanne and Jan's Spring Rolls

Our Spring Roll Sample
We were then surprised with a small tasting of the spring rolls, they were the other option as an appetizer.  They were served with a sweet chili sauce and they were also tasty and delightful. But we knew we made the right choice with the Chicken Satay.

Pad Thai with Chicken plus Peanut Sauce

Red Curry Beef *Beyond Hot :-)* with Turm. Rice
Our main course arrived a while later and I had the Red Curry Beef while the ladies had Pad Thai with chicken. Both were very tasty. The ladies asked the chef for more peanut sauce as the noodles were a bit dry. With the addition of the sauce the dish became elevated into a fabulous meal. The curry was good but I stayed jealous of the ladies meal. I enjoyed a lot of hot chili sauce and even managed to get some extra for my dish. It was pretty hot but not the hottest I have ever had. I do enjoy a VERY hot and spicy curry. It was nice that Bodhi provided the heat on the side so I could choose the level of heat I could endure.

Homemade Ice Cream and Chocolate Sauce
Dessert was homemade ice cream and chocolate sauce. The sauce was homemade with dark chocolate and was bitter sweet. Very tasty when combined with the ice cream. The ice cream was almost like an ice milk and it was such a refreshing finale to an awesome meal.

Chatting Up a Storm and Having Fun :-)
We were there for close to four hours and it seemed like 15 minutes. Our conversation with not only the chef but the whole family and our new friends Jan and Leanne made the time fly. It was such an enjoyable experience that we vowed to return to try the brunch in a week or so. I personally can't wait to try the sourdough waffles. It's going to be so tasty!

I asked and was taken into the kitchen while the meal was being prepared. A photo of the whole crew, Bodhi, his wife, mother, father, and even his kids all pitched in and made the meal so enjoyable.

After the meal we each sampled and bought three bottles of Bodhi's Coconut Cream and one bottle of Bodhi's Homemade Salad Dressing. I hope to become a friend not just a customer. Genuine people is the only way I can describe the whole family. All in all, this was a super experience that we would give 5 shamrocks.

A View Toward Cuenca
Be aware, this is a place to go with good friends, relax, eat, talk, enjoy the view, and not worry about anything. If your in a hurry go to McDonalds. This experience is a multiple course meal that is just as much about the people you break bread with as well as the food you consume. If you enjoy food with some complexity...with layers of flavors...then this is the perfect place to go.

Happy Father's Day to My Wonderful Husband

Dan,
This has been a hard couple of years.  I was with you during most of the custody fight, the cross country hunt for your beautiful and sweet daughters, all the long road trips to Colorado/Georgia, talking to private investigators, and then repossession men.  I watched the fun and interaction of the Skype visits with Emma and Danielle.  It was cute when that told you they loved and missed you.  We were even able to record some of those visits.  It will be a nice time capsule item to add to the girls trucks.  One day they will be able to look back at those videos, all the documents, and baby pictures with you spending time with them.

Emma's 3rd Birthday...Taken By Daddy :-)
Maria's judgement day will come.  One day she will have to answer to both of your daughters and God for her actions.  I would imagine their is a spot in hell waiting for her.
Celtic Cross
You have taken the high and classy road and I'm proud of you.  You have proven time and time again that you love your daughters with all your heart.

She has not to this day and likely will never follow court orders or do what is in the best interest of your girls.

Every time you see little girls I can see your heart breaking and I know not a day passes that you don't think about the girls.  Just know that your not alone and that my heart breaks with yours.

Emma and Danielle may not be my biological daughters but, they are my Step-Daughters and Mama's Step-Grand Daughters.  They would have an amazing life with us and I hope they both come across this blog and see that our home is their home and they can always call us and/or live with us.

I came across this poem and thought of you, Emma, and Danielle.  Enjoy :-)

My Lost Love My Lost Child

I wonder what you're doing
and how you're living life
what new things did you learn today
and how did you sleep last night
did you feel raindrops on your face
or sunshine in your eye
of all the questions left unknown
the biggest one is why
why can't we be together
why can't I watch you grow
why can't I guide you through this world
this I just don't know
but I promise we'll be together
no matter how long it seems
just know your always in my heart
and always in my dreams

Dan's Take on Our Day at the Corpus Christi's Festival and Our Family Review: Ali Baba Kabab's in Cuenca, Ecuador

Flower Market in El Centro Cuenca

Flower Market in El Centro Cuenca

Flower Market in El Centro Cuenca
We went to the flower market and then on to the booths that have candies and cookies for sale.  Some of the items are supposed to only be for sale once a year at this festival so the ladies were eager to attend and try some different offerings.

Heather's Favorite Building in Cuenca

What we found was mostly not homemade and a bit stale or very dry.  There were a lot of gummies ( a favorite of mine!)  So I scored a few that are hard to find here.

Sweets, Baked Goods, and Gummies :-)

We walked the booths amazed at the amount of items for sale.  There was a light rain falling and we ducked from awning to awning to try and stay dry.  That idea worked well for about 5 minutes, then an awning gave up a puddle and it emptied upon Heather and me soaking us both.  We should have brought an umbrella but when we left home, it was clear and sunny.  That’s how it is here in Cuenca, it can rain for 10 minutes and go back to clear and sunny the rest of the day.  It reminds me of Colorado in that way.
ATTACK OF THE KILLER BEES
Another thing that we had been warned about was the bee's at the booths.  No joke, there were swarms of them buzzing and eating.  I am allergic to the stings and I was a bit nervous to be around so many of them at once.  Mama assured me that they had no interest in me, they were in heaven with all the sugar and honey around.  Walking through clouds of bee's when a single sting can send you to the hospital is still unnerving to say the least.  But Mama was right, I went unscathed.

After we finished our walk, we caught a cab to a restaurant I had been to once before on a “guy's night out.”  I had enjoyed it a lot and had spent a lot of time talking it up to the ladies.  It took a bit of convincing.  They had tried Greek food in Hernando, Florida with little success.  I had some doubts they would like this place but I talked them into trying it.

Ali Baba Kabab's is a small friendly restaurant that serves alcohol and has a lively time most weekends. We managed to come in during a quiet time and were able to chat for a few minutes with the owner, Reza Alibabai. The ladies loved the umbrella's that act as an awning and make the place stand out. Very colorful and that's something they love a lot.

Conversation is easy and fun in this place. The ladies ordered Polo Kabab's and I ordered myself a Polo Shwarma. The food was excellent, fresh, and very tasty. The garlic sauce is soooo good, it's addictive. We asked for extra for all three of us.

A football game came on tv (soccer in the states) as soon as kickoff happened, 15 people appeared, ordering drinks and food and "shwarmed" the place.  We felt lucky to have had the time we had with Reza. He is a very engaging man. He is Iranian and he has traveled extensively. His food is a treat for westerners who have little to no exposure to Persian cooking. I had previously had Iranian cooking in Chicago and Reza's cooking was even better than my 20 year old memories of my previous experiences.

Dan's "Pollo Shwarma"

Heather and Mama's "Pollo Kabab's"

So the shamrocks? 5 out of 5 the ladies loved the food and both agreed it was a gem. They even ordered some Shwarma's to go for dinner. Both have said they can't wait to go back again. It is amazing all the diversity we find in the Expat community, it is a blast to discover. This was more than an experience in a restaurant, it was about culture, being expats, and discovering how simple and honest the food of Iran can be. Yet it is also complex at the same time. The spices used build a flavor profile that's very addictive. You look at the ingredients and they are honest. Nothing is disguised. It's a lot like Real Mexican cooking in that respect. Yet when combined, complexity develops and your lost in the harmony.

I hope that someday relations between our home nations can be repaired so that we can take a trip there and continue to explore the cuisine. Until then, Ali Baba Kabab's will more than suffice. Give it a try and have some fun!
