What in the World Happened to The Bowen's?

To find out what happened to the Bowen Family we are going to need to go Back in Time...

A new adventure is awaiting us.

But first, I needed to hook up "Bessie" our families RV to our pickup for the first time.  In the end, there were five people advising me on the proper hook up procedures.  Ugh...What takes me only fifteen minutes now took well over an hour and several attempts to get it hooked up right so EVERYONE with on opinion was happy.

Once that was finished I decided that in the 100+ degree Fahrenheit heat that I needed another shower.

Finally, the job was done and I was showered, it was time for me to drove the rig to a local empty parking lot to figure out my trailer brake setup.  While the ladies and FurBabies checked our mail at the UPS store and picked up some lunch.  I had confidence that the setup was dialed in, my coffee was hot and off we drove.  The ladies drove in front of me with the Toyota "Ruby" since they had the GPS.   We had two brand new walkie talkies that refused to hold a charge and two cell phones.

About an hour into the drive we were still in North Carolina...when I had a serious miracle happen. A pickup decided to use my lane with me still in it. The pickup hit my drivers side mirror with it's passenger side mirror. I was very lucky there was no cars in the right lane as I swerved into that lane. I managed to pull off to the shoulder and I got out to look at the damage. The other pickup had pulled off as well. I walked the truck and trailer and looked for a blown tire or signs of damage. Go figure, the other driver decided to take off without finding out if anyone was hurt or if he had damaged the RV or pickup.

Sigh. I did have his tag # thanks to Heather jotting it down but what could I do? Spend the night waiting for the state police to take a report? Nah. His lucky day. A few scuff marks on the mirror was all the damage. Drive on. We had a lot of miles to cover before we could say that we were on the west side of the United States (west side of the Mississippi River.)

We drove all day, all night, and into the next day.  At around 10 AM, we were in St. Joseph, Missouri. Dead dog tired and ready to sleep. Heather and Mama found an RV park and we fell into a deep sleep for the rest of that day and night. We had driven like mad to try to get past the Mississippi river, beyond the insane traffic around Kansas City and St. Louis. We vowed to almost kill ourselves to get beyond St. Louis for Heather and I it was a major hurdle in our minds.

A big part of keeping me alert and awake while I drove on my own was that I picked out a large amount of audio-books from the Franklin, NC library. After we were done driving, we mailed them all back via USPS Media Mail with plenty of time to spare. Very painless and inexpensive. And I got to enjoy over 9 books on this trip. Sweet!

While I drove alone, the ladies had both cats and dogs in the car. While they had more to keep them awake and entertained, they also had to manage a zoo. Not as much fun that's for sure.

Our next stop was Presho, South Dakota where we decided to spend a few days to rest and recharge ourselves. We ventured out to the local bowling alley and enjoyed a wonderful meal of pizza. I even enjoyed a double shot of Jameson Irish Whiskey. Heather even tasted it and said she was on fire down to her stomach. Tasty stuff for me!

On we drove, our next stop was Columbus, Montana. A desolate RV park that provided us lots of peace, quiet, and 100+ heat. We decided to stay a week and tour the Black hills, a bit.

We drove the Beartooth Highway and Yellowstone National Park. We vowed to take another trip back to that beautiful area and spend more time when the area is less crowded. Yellowstone, while very pretty was overcrowded and as such we didn't enjoy it as much as we think we might have.
As we came into the final leg of the move, we found the fires in Montana. The highway was still open but there were signs saying not to pull over and the smoke was very thick. We noticed the glow of bright orange that evening from the fires. Little did we know we would face smoke from those fires for the next two months. We ended the move in Kettle Falls, Washington State. After four days in a small RV Park just on the edge on town. We located a different RV park in Republic, WA. Where we could stay for a month.

We drove all over the area looking for a home we could call our own. While in Republic, WA we enjoyed Steve'Os Pizza and also discovered an issue with the pickup. A local repair shop took almost two weeks but they did a great job in fixing the pinion yolk, race, and bearings. They also replaced the seals and bearings on the axle (both sides.) This was a seriously costly repair, but well worth it.

Gold Mountain RV Park in Republic, WA was the best RV park that any of us have ever seen. And most likely the best we will ever see. The park was all 80-100 ft pull thru spaces, 30 and 50 amp, water, and sewer at each site. The clubhouse, bathrooms, and park were very modern and always clean. We stayed a total of two months and even now we miss that RV park.

On Wednesday October 4th 2017, we hooked up Bessie “Our Travel Trailer” and left Republic, WA. Bound for...

Life in a 2014 Forest River Flagstaff Travel Trailer: RV Step Stairs and Dometic's 300 Series Toilet

Our New RV Stairs

RV stairs are flimsy and over time can start to buckle.  Plus, our FurBabies "Sasha, Zoey Bear, and Bella Boo" and the humans in our family do not like them at all.  We needed sturdy and safe stairs for our family.  The cost to buy a saw and speed square plus knowing that I would only use them one time and not need them again for years to come led me to hire out the job.

Craigslist to the rescue.  I contacted 3 local handymen and only 1 responded.  He is a local builder that works part-time at Lowe's.  He came out to the RV and discussed the job and took measurements. Less than week later, we have a solid sturdy pressure treated lumber stairs.  All I had to do was add some skateboard type tape for a more secure stair tread and this project was accomplished.  Pretty cool if I must say so myself!

Next issue!!!

A few days after we moved into the RV there was a serious odor coming from the bathroom.  No one likes to smell pee so it was time to figure out what was going on.  I dumped the black then the grey tanks.  Our girl "Bessie" has a black tank flush and I hooked up a hose and made sure the black tank was cleared.

The next day, I went to the park owner and borrowed a ladder.  I went up on "Bessie's" roof with a hose and put water down both the kitchen and bath vent stacks in case there was a clog in one.  There was still a seriously stinky odor issue.

Time to explore the internet.

The maker of the toilet is Dometic's.  I surfed the web for a few days and they I hit pay dirt. In 2013 and part of 2014, Dometic's toilet series 300 had a serious issue that the company didn't issue a recall for...But, they would replace the toilet for free if any customer complained.

Our RV is a 2014.  It had seen little to almost no use by the first owner.  Would Dometic's still honor the replacement?  I sent off an email to find out.  It took about a week of being bouncing around the office staff until I hit someone who worked in the right department and could act.  Heather found the serial number and every number on the toilet and we waited for a reply.

We were told we would get a new toilet in the mail. And three days later it arrived. There was even a toilet flange rubber seal included.  The same model, series 300.  But redesigned.  The old one was like a bowl inside another. The outer bowl was the decorative outside and the inside bowl was the toilet bowl itself. Between them was an inner rubber seal that was pressed in at the factory during assembly. It leaked allowing the space between the bowls to fill with waste water.  And stink!!!

I have changed and installed plenty of toilets in a house but, never in an RV.  It was actually faster and easier than a house.  I had to borrow a combination wrench from another camper as my socket set could not get into the flange bolts.  I was done in less than 5 minutes.  The smell issue was finally resolved!

One word of caution if you have this issue, the waste water inside the toilet will cause a mess when you remove the toilet.  I have a door in my bathroom so I just chucked it outside.  If you don't, consider the tub to keep the mess down.

I want to give a big high five to Dometic's for standing behind the things they make. If anything breaks in the RV and they make a replacement, they have me as a customer! Thanks for being honest, and for sending me a free toilet! Your company rocks!

And for those of you wondering.  Yes, Heather has named our RV "Bessie" and we are Loving Her!

North Carolina...The Bowen Knot Family Have a New Place to Call Home!

We Love the Smoky Mountain's!!!
The Bowen Knot Family (Mama, Dan, Sasha, Zoey Bear, Bella Boo, Molly Moo Moo, Luna, and myself) have been on one wild adventure in the last 30 days.  On May 11, 2016 we flew out of Guayaquil, Ecuador, South America and landed in Miami, Florida, United States.  From there we rented a mini van and headed up to Orlando, FL to visit with family and friends.  While we were in Orlando, FL we were able to spend time with my sister Amanda, Aunt Susie, Uncle Sonny, our friend Janet, and my BFF Christie May.  Janet invited Dan and I to breakfast at Another Broken Egg in Lake Mary, FL.  She also asked Christie to join us and she was available. We had a wonderful and peaceful time.  It was great to be able to spend time with family and friends that love and missed us.  Thank you Janet for arranging breakfast and treating us.  {HUGS}

Time to switch gears!!!  Our family's plan was to buy a house and then buy an RV to see the beautiful sited and National Parks of the United States and Canada.  After the nightmare of house buying from Ecuador we decided that it would be in the best interest for our family to buy an RV then a house down the road.  The RV buying was a breeze and super easy.  All of us are thrilled and happy we bought our travel trailer "Bessie."  We found a wonderful RV Park and are Loving Our New Relaxed Life.

We Bought an RV "Bessie"
We Just Finished Bessie's Inspection

Once we had our RV Bessie it was then time for Dan and I to go car shopping.  And believe me we were ALL excited to buy a vehicle.  While living in Ecuador we had a wonderful driver "Roman" but, that got expensive and we had to chill at home the better part of the last 15 months.  We are all road warriors and LOVE to take drives.  Well...Bella Boo is trying to be a warrior and she is getting better with each drive we take.  The first few drives she drooled and looked really car sick...kind of like me when I'm not driving.  I can turn a ugly shade of gray-green and usually toss my cookies.

Back to car buying.  Dan and I visited about 10 car dealerships and finally found our family the perfect cross-over vehicle a Toyota Venza that we call her Ruby.  She is roomy for human/furbabies, comfortable, has power for the mountains, she had a clean car fax, and she was low on miles "We will fix that Ruby!"
Our Alamo Rental Van
After buying Ruby on Friday in Hickory, NC we cleaning the furbabies hair out of the rental van and returning it to Asheville Regional Airport in Asheville, NC on Saturday night.

It will be so nice when this rollercoaster finally stops and we can just relax at the RV Park or take some road trips.  Today Mama and I did some shopping for must have items, got prices for a postal box, and enjoyed a quick lunch at the Sunset Restaurant here in Franklin, NC.  The burgers were okay...but, there Strawberry Pie was AMAZING!  Thanks for the suggestion Goin Postal. We picked up some food at Ingles Grocery Store. Then back to the RV to finish organizing the RV and hopefully BBQ.  My body, mind, and spirit need to recuperate.  I'm sick of being exhausted and we are looking forward to eating at home again. We are all feeling yucky.  Missing the fresh foods we got used to in Ecuador.  All of us are looking forward to going to our local farmers markets and getting back to a healthier diet.

The next day we attended our 1st Monthly RV Park Pot Luck Dinner.  We took a monster size pot of Sloppy Joes, Buns, and Baked Beans.  When we showed up everyone said how much they loved my new red wagon "Radio."  Thanks, Dan for getting her for me.  I Love Her!  The full-timers that attended the potluck were all quiet and antisocial and the food was okay.  Within 45 minutes of the potluck start time everyone had dinner, dessert, packed up, left, and the place was all cleaned up.  Dan and I stayed and played pool for a while. And then Mama and I finished the night by chilling and watching Apple TV while Dan read a book.

We Are So Excited!!!  We Took Our First Day-Drive!  Dan, Candy, Sasha, Zoey Bear, Bella Boo and myself enjoyed a drive to Gatlinburg, TN to check out all the changes in the area since we last visited in 2009.  We left the RV Park in Franklin, NC at 2pm and returned home at about 10pm.  Our thoughts on the Gatlinburg, TN area?  The area has grown...But, it also looks like loads of fun. We all can't wait to visit again.

Childhood Memories!

Not Surprised! Gluten and me did not get along before we moved to Ecuador, South America.  Down there I was not restricted in any way.   I could eat breads, pastas, pizza, and more without swelling, water retention, and breathing problems. Well over the last 3 weeks we have been eating out and honestly I chose not to be careful and consumed the foods I love, missed, and craved. Now, I'm paying a price for those carefree actions.  Puffy Face has Returned!  I am a smart girl and I need to figure this out.

Heather "Gluten Girl" Bowen

Yesterday, I was asked if I miss anything about living in Ecuador. My answer is: I miss a few amazing friends. Plus, I miss how I physically felt and the freedom I had to eat Gluten Free (Gluten is processed differently down there), GMO Free, High Fructose Free, Pesticide Free, and Produce Prices. Here in the USA to eat that way it will cost us a boat load of dough!!!

Dan...Surprise Mama and me with tickets to see "The Little Mermaid, the Broadway Musical!" Thank you, Dan we are beyond excited to see it in July! {HUGS}

Family Day Drive #2!  We headed towards Highlands and Cashiers, NC and ended up driving through Brevard, NC.  We had a greasy lunch at the Cardinal Drive-In in Brevard, NC.  Greasy = the BEST Onion Rings, Ever!  Next time we want to try the Strawberry Milkshake or the Chocolate Malt Milkshake.  We are loving all the drive options we have around here.  We also passed The Whistle Stop for the 1st time on the way to Highlands, NC and we are looking forward to stopping by and visiting my Best Friend Denise's mom Fay.

Another Enjoyable and Fun Filled Day!  I think I might need to find a new way to say that!  We enjoyed a Beef Brisket, Fries, Baked Beans, and Ice Cold Sweet Tea lunch at Willy's Bar.B.Que.

Next we headed to the Whistle Stop Depot to visit with Fay. We haven't been able to get together with my BFF Denise and her Sweetie Pie David, yet.  I'm really missing her tons and tons!

The Whistle Stop Depot here in Franklin, NC is HUGE and FILLED with LOTS of GREAT items. I found a beautiful wine & cheese basket that Dan and I can use on Date-Day-Drives and loads of Old Time Candies.
