The Bowen Knot Family Enjoys Our 1st Christmas in Ecuador

For our 1st Christmas in Ecuador we were making bread and cookies to give as gifts to those special people that have helped us since our arrive in Ecuador.  Soledad, Jim, and the our amazing landlord and friends the Culcay's were on the top of our list.  Suddenly with no warning our landlord and sons showed up while we were baking.  They gave us a very large turkey.  And we gave them loads of baked bread and goodies.  The next day was Christmas eve and in the oven the turkey went. It came out golden brown. By far the best tasting and perfectly cooked turkey that any of us have ever enjoyed.  It was an amazing, kind, caring gift and such a wonderful surprise!  Turkey's are expensive down here $40-$75US and we had opted not to put out the expense.  Thank You, Culcay Family You Are All So Amazing.

OMGosh...I, Dan Harley Bowen Have Finally Found Peace, Love, Happiness, and My Renewed Creative Side

Artist:  Dan H. Bowen
I used to draw and paint quite a lot. I even read a LOT of books. And movies. OMGosh, I was and really still am a complete nut on movies.

Then I got married to a soul draining witch that extinguished all creative abilities...enough said, but you get the gist.  After nine years of hell and two more of divorce mess, I had an exorcism performed, in a way and got rid of all that evil.

I feel much better now.

I picked back up some of my desire to draw and paint.  I am back to reading books and enjoying movies.  I listen to music again.  In short, a lot of the things that made up a big part of who I am is recovered and is beginning to flourish again.

I love to paint!  I paint with serious ambition for someone who is untrained.  I love to experiment and create new designs.  My mind has so many ideas and I lack the serious talent to realize much of them. But, I do try.

Artist:  Dan H. Bowen
Most of my paintings are the second, third, or even fourth attempt on that same canvas.  I keep trying until I get something I am completely happy with.  I don’t do this for others, I do it for me.  For enjoyment but also as a form of personal therapy.  It truly helps a lot.

Artist:  Dan H. Bowen
Heather thinks its good enough that others might like to have some of my painting, as well.  I doubt it but, hey you never know.  I had several pieces that I gave to one of our best friends Christie before we left for Ecuador.  I think its neat to see the differences in my skills over time.

I wish I had the money to have a studio where I could let the paint fly without a care.  I think I would have 50 or more canvases going at any given time.  From small to huge…even 10 feet long. I would paint every day to my music.  I know I would not create anything of serious value but its most likely what I would do if I ever won the lottery.

I also like blacksmith and metal work.  I would love someday to learn to work with copper more.  And knife making interests me a LOT.  Who knows? Maybe someday I will be able to realize the dreams.  For now I dabble with a paintbrush and I get to feel better about myself in doing so.

I think it's important that I point out what made all of this possible. Heather Yvonne Bowen.  Her love, support, and encouragement.  My marriage to my first love works.  We respect each other.  We put each other first.  It makes such a difference that it's amazing.  Happiness not hate.  We are a team and I get her support and criticisms.  She does not lie or tell me what I want to hear.  She challenges me to seek improvement.  To better myself and my relationship with her.  It is work and it can be difficult.  But all I need to remember is that hard work is the basis for anything worth having.  I seriously love her and value what we have.  I am so lucky to have reconnected with her and realized my dreams with always with her.

Here is a preview of my latest painting that I'm still working on:

Heather Makes a Shocking Discovery!!!

A few weeks ago, I posted a teaser on Facebook for my friends and family.  Somehow is didn't survive so I am redoing it.

We had decided the Sunday would be one of relaxing and taking it easy.  So many days we find ourselves very busy with a ton of tasks.  The plan was to just relax, chill, and maybe watch a few movies.  We would have to cook dinner, but that was it.

Heather went into the cabinet where we keep our potatoes and she made a shocking discovery.

The potatoes I had recently bought at the market were rotting already.  Apparently a few spuds were wet and we had not removed or inspected them when they came home.  Into action we all went. Heather and Candy began to clean the storage and the potatoes while I started doing the prep work. Within a few hours all the remaining potatoes had been cleaned, peeled, cut and created into some fabulous dishes.

We made Pioneer Woman Ree Drummond's Au Gratin Potatoes, Potato soup, baked potatoes and some homemade french fries.  Lastly, we made some garlic mashed potatoes.  The rest of the week life was very easy.  Most of our meals were already made. All we had to do was grill up some burgers or chicken, everything else was done.

We may have lost the day of relaxing but we all worked so well together, we really were a team...it was amazing.  Little talking, we all just jumped in.  It's a lot of work but it is fun cooking our meals here.  We don't pop open a can or open a box, anymore. There is no fast food to fall back on.  Either we cook or we go hungry.  And everything is GMO free and pesticide free.  The cost is very low for the fruits and veggies we eat.

I can go into Cuenca and buy shrimp at a market for almost nothing.  Recently, I got $20.00 worth of shrimp.  It was four kilos (8.8lbs) and over 150 shrimp!  Large ones!  Yummy!  They great to have with Fettuccine Alfredo or Scampi.  Or just cooked in a pan with garlic and butter. Mmmmm…..

While Heather, Roman, and I were waiting for our Carolina Smokehouse items to arrive we decided to grab a quick bite to eat in a restaurant next door to the Carolina Smokehouse.  Colombian food!  I have had it before many times and we sat and ordered our some food. Within five minutes it arrived...Hot.  And really Delicious!  If your in the area give it a try.  It's a seriously a different type of cooking compared to Ecuador.  It's was very affordable and the menu had a lot of options.

It is really interesting is all the different types of food I have gotten Heather to try.  She jokes that she is a lot like a 5 year old when it comes to being adventurous.  So far, since we got married Heather has tried Iranian, Greek, Colombian, French, Peruvian, German, Bavarian, and of course Ecuadorian.  I am sure there are others but they are just escaping me right now.  The point is Heather has opened up her mind, and now gets excited to try different foods.

She has also gotten much better at recognizing different spices and flavors. She has realized that her palate can be developed with just a little work and she has made leaps with her efforts. I am very proud both her and Candy.  They have broken out of their shells and started to try a lot of foods that in the past they would not have.

Heather is so good at it that she can now season homemade sauces and she can taste it and figure out what it needs, if anything. That’s hard when every time we make sauce its a bit different. But she now knows what to add to make it taste great. It has increased her enjoyment and has added to the adventure of living outside of the United States of America.

Carolina Smokehouse in Cuenca, Ecuador...It's What Santa Brought Our Family!

Christmas Gift to Each Other...in the Bowen Knot Household

Lets talk meat for a moment. Meat here is butchered differently. Cuts are not the same, no hormones, the meat is grass fed, and very lean.

Given that things are different, we miss a few things and decided to treat ourselves to some locally made gringo style products.

We had eaten at several restaurants that featured Carolina Smokehouse bacon and every time it was amazing. So we contacted them, spoke to Sandy, and placed an order.

What we ordered:
  • 10 each or 1 lbs - Sausage Patties "Mild" for $10US
  • 25 strips or 1 lbs - Smoked Bacon for $15US
  • Several servings - Locally Homemade Grits for $3US
  • Made 12 - Biscuit Mix for $3US
  • 2 lbs - Double Smoked Ham $32US

Carolina Smokehouse "Bacon"

Carolina Smokehouse "Mild Sausage"

Carolina Smokehouse "Biscuits and Grits"
Carolina Smokehouse "Receipt"
White Wine from Chile

Red Wine from Chile

While costly, we missed American pork a lot and we thought this would make for a wonderful family Christmas gift. We enjoyed most of the products. The ham however was a bit odd. The company offers prosciutto and we suspect that is what we got by mistake.

The highlights for us were the bacon and grits. We know we will be getting more of both very soon! Yum!!! The sausage and ham/prosciutto and biscuits were good but not quite to our liking. We are overjoyed to find grits and tasty bacon. Both are favorites and considered soul food for our family.

I think you will enjoy the different items Carolina smokehouse offers. Here in Ecuador its nice to find a taste of home.

Update:  Heather contacted Carolina Smokehouse and learned that we were given a big uncut prosciutto and Sandy was very sorry.  She offered to replace the ham for free and she even gave us a free biscuit mix.  While we were there we also purchased more bacon, grits, and there new sea salt.
